Who Uses the Ladies-Only Area?
You'll see:
Complete beginners learning the basics
Women building strength with the smith machine
Postpartum mothers using the hip thrust station
Those who prefer female-only spaces for cultural/religious reasons
Women with gym anxiety using it as a stepping stone
Experienced lifters who want a calmer environment
All ages, all sizes, all fitness levels. Women only.
Typical Atmosphere
It's genuinely different from the main gym. With only 3 treadmills and 1 smith machine (compared to the main gym's extensive equipment), you'll typically see 5-15 women training at peak times.
It's not silent - there's conversation and music - but it lacks the intensity and testosterone-heavy atmosphere that can feel overwhelming on mixed gym floors.
Want to connect with other women navigating gym anxiety? The Not So Typical Fitness Community is a safe space specifically for neurodivergent people and anyone who needs a different approach to fitness.
What to Expect on Your First Visit
1. Enter through main doors - You must walk through the main gym to reach the ladies area entrance (downstairs) or ladies locker room entrance (upstairs).
2. Most women start with cardio - The treadmills and cross trainers are intuitive and give you time to observe the space.
3. The mirrors are useful, not intimidating - One wall has mirrors, but they're positioned for form-checking rather than full-body scrutiny.
4. Equipment sharing is normal - With limited equipment, you might need to work in with someone at peak times. It's completely normal to ask "Can I jump in between your sets?"
5. Start small - 20-30 minutes is enough for your first visit. You're building familiarity, not proving anything.
Getting A JD Gyms Ladies Area Induction
JD Gyms Wolverhampton offers a free gym induction - you don't need to book it, just turn up at the time shown in the class timetable. Find it on:
The JD Gyms app
Website class timetable
iPads at reception desk
Your induction can cover the ladies-only area and show you how to access it.
Need equipment refreshers later? Any female staff member can provide additional guidance in the ladies area.
JD Gyms Ladies Only Area FAQs
"Can I train in both areas with one membership?"
Yes. Your membership gives full access to everything. Many women use the ladies area for certain workouts and main gym for others.
"What if a male trainer is training a female client?"
Male trainers cannot enter the ladies-only area. If you book PT with a male trainer, sessions take place on the main gym floor. I'm a female trainer, so I can train clients in either space.
"Can I bring a male guest?"
No. Even on guest passes, males must use the main gym facilities only.
"What happens at midnight?"
The ladies area closes for cleaning and reopens at 6am. During 12am-6am, you can use the main gym (which is much quieter during these hours) and the accessible facilities downstairs.
“How can I get between the ladies lockers and changing rooms and the ladies gym?”
If you enter via the downstairs door to the ladies gym, you can access the ladies locker room via the private staircase that is between the two.
"Can I move equipment between areas?"
No. Equipment stays in its designated area.
"What should I actually DO when I get there?"
Check out the beginners guide or have a plan in your mind before you even go in.
If you’d rather not figure this out alone, the Not So Typical Fitness Community is a free, supportive space where women share experiences of using the ladies-only area and navigating gym anxiety together.

The ladies-only area exists to make training feel more accessible; not to rush you or test you.
You don’t have to feel confident before you go.
You don’t need to know how to use every machine.
And you definitely don’t need a “perfect” plan.
Confidence in the gym is built by showing up gently, not by getting everything right first.
